Supporting SEND Pupils Speech Language and Communication needs using PIVATS5 and the Derbyshire Language Scheme

Course Aims and Objectives

For pupils identified on the CoP as having cognition and learning needs or communication and interaction needs identifying speech, language and communication targets linked to PIVATS5 to show small steps of progress can be problematic.

Lancashire has linked PIVATS5 English with the Derbyshire Language Scheme to support pupils progress and development in speech, language and communication needs.  If in school you have a "hidden" box of Derbyshire Language Scheme and no-one who knows how to use this linked to PIVATS5 this is your opportunity to find out.  If you have no Derbyshire Language Scheme there will be some available to use.  If you have SEND pupils also on pupil premium then this speech, language and communication support intervention will evidence additional support.

Visual Strategies

This two hour course explores the use of visual strategies to support children with Autism within a mainstream classroom. The course will offer a variety of practical examples, with delegates being able to take away a variety of practical ideas.

The content of the course will be illustrated with real life examples throughout in order to make the theory relevant to practice.

There will be opportunities throughout the session to ask questions and discuss possible scenarios.

Course Outcomes:

  • An understanding of visual strategies and how they can be used to support individuals with a diagnosis of ASD.
  • Practical ideas to implement within mainstream schools.

ASD AWARENESS This course provides an introduction to autism for all staff working with pupils with ASD.

 

 

The course will cover:

  • Thought and Behaviour – difficulties with repetitive patterns of behaviour and rigidity of thought.
  • Language and Communication – How language and communication may differ in children with ASD.
  • Social – social interaction difficulties and how ASD children interact with others.
  • Sensory Issues – How pupils with ASD may interpret the world in a different way through their senses and how sensory issues are often a trigger for behaviour.

Course Outcomes:

  • Understanding of how to support a child with autism within a mainstream education setting.
  • Practical strategies to use to support a child with autism to access their education at their individual pace and level of ability.
  • Strategies to support the development of social relationships, confidence and self esteem.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to adapt the mainstream learning environment for a child with autism.
