Course Aims and Objectives

The course will provide theory (what you must do legally re SEND in school) and practical advice (who and what is available re support for SEND in Sunderland)  The course framework is based around the SENCo 55 standards which are grouped into five key headings for the five sessions.

Session 1: Professional context of the SENCo

Session 2: Strategic development of the SEN policy and procedures

Session 3: Co-ordinating SEN provision

Session 4: Leading development and the support of colleagues

Session 5: Working in partnership with parents, families and other professionals

Each session will be followed by 'fact finding' in schools and use of the CoP 2015.

Aimed at: This 5 session training course is run for teaching staff who want to know more about the role of the SENCo or who could be 'supporting' a current SENCo or who have just started the role or are covering for a SENCo on maternity leave.

Session 1: Wednesday 1st November     4:00pm - 6:00pm

Session 2: Wednesday 8th November     4:00pm - 6:00pm

Session 3: Tuesday 14th November   4:00pm - 6:00pm

Session 4: Wednesday 22nd November  4:00pm - 6:00pm

It is intended for all 5 sessions to be attended and an internal "Together for Children" certificate to be provided.

This course has 3 elements and runs over 3 half days.  The 3 elements will cover:-

Element 1 - What is Communication and Language development: comprehension (understanding) and expression (language)

Element 2 - What is "typical" development of speech: understanding and production: birth to 5 years for children.

Element 3 - Effect and impact of adults and environment on the development of typically developing children.  Discussion will also occur with regard to what can effect the development of speech, language and communication in children birth to 5 years.

I CAN Early Talk Accreditation: Supporting Communication and Language

Course Aims & Objectives

I CAN Early Talk Accreditation at supportive level is an endorsement of a service or setting's ability to support the language skills of all children.  It is appropriate for all early years providers who work with children from birth to five years. Accrededitation recognises good practice in promoting good practice in promoting speech, language and communication development in children who are developing skills in line with expectations from their age.  Accredited settings and services also show good practice in identification and referral of children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

I CAN Early Talk Accreditation at supportive level

  • helps staff to create communication supportive environments
  • develops staff skilled in speech, language and communication development in the 0-5 age range
  • supports achievement of EYFS communication and language targets in England with some P.S.E.D targets

There is a full days training with a follow up twilight, a full day accreditation visit and the setting MUST provide a portfolio of standards evidence provided as the full day training cost: £550

Accreditation gives the setting the I CAN logo to be used on letterhead etc for Ofsted.

Supporting SEND Pupils Speech Language and Communication needs using PIVATS5 and the Derbyshire Language Scheme

Course Aims and Objectives

For pupils identified on the CoP as having cognition and learning needs or communication and interaction needs identifying speech, language and communication targets linked to PIVATS5 to show small steps of progress can be problematic.

Lancashire has linked PIVATS5 English with the Derbyshire Language Scheme to support pupils progress and development in speech, language and communication needs.  If in school you have a "hidden" box of Derbyshire Language Scheme and no-one who knows how to use this linked to PIVATS5 this is your opportunity to find out.  If you have no Derbyshire Language Scheme there will be some available to use.  If you have SEND pupils also on pupil premium then this speech, language and communication support intervention will evidence additional support.
