Newly Qualified Teachers

Do you have QTS?

NQTs need to have been awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to be in a position to be able to begin their induction period.
This includes having passed Skills Tests in both Literacy and Maths, if they have trained in England – those who trained in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are exempt from having to take the Skills Tests.

If you have not yet been awarded QTS, please contact Rasheda Khatun as a matter of urgency.

Registering NQTs for Induction

NQTs must be registered as an NQT within three weeks of starting at one of our schools – if this isn't done, we won't be able to start Induction until the day that we receive the completed Registration Form.
The Registration Form template can be downloaded from the downloadable resources on this website, and can be e-mailed to Wendy Kay at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Headteachers will need to sign registration forms.

NQT Assessment Reports

First Assessment Report

The first assessment report for an NQT should make direct reference to the 'Standards for Teachers' (Sept 2012) standards which the NQT is demonstrating as being met, and to any standard which the NQT is demonstrating as not being met - there will be gaps; the purpose of this report is to show the NQT's progress, at this point in time, towards meeting all of the standards in full by the end of their induction.

Second Assessment Report

The second assessment report for an NQT should make reference to any standards reported on in the first assessment report, and their continued progress (or otherwise) towards being met by the end of the NQT's induction.  The report should also make reference to any standard which was not reported on in the first assessment report, but which the NQT is now demonstrating as being met, and to any standard which the NQT is now demonstrating as not being met - there may still be gaps; the purpose of this report is to show the NQT's progress, at this point in time, towards meeting all of the standards by the end of their induction.

Final Assessment Report

The final assessment report for an NQT should make reference to all Teaching Standards and how they are being demonstrated by the NQT.

For each assessment report:  we suggest that assessment reports are written using the headings of the Standards for Teachers.  We ask that each section of the report is written in paragraph (report) style (explaining how the school knows that the stardards are / are not being met), with a list of the standards being demonstrated as not being met at the end of each section.

All NQT Induction Assessment forms are on the Sunderland NQT website.  Instruction for emailing forms to the LA are included.

Part-Time NQTs and NQT Induction

"The minimum period that can count towards Induction relates to the length of contract, not the full-time equivalence of the NQT."

Schools should be aware that the minimum period of time that can count towards an NQT's induction – one term – relates to the length of contract, and not the full-time equivalence of the NQT.
Therefore, as long as schools are employing an NQT for at least this minimum period of time, they can be taken through Induction – irrespective of the full-time equivalence of the NQT. Part-time NQTs employed by a school for a term or more, but leaving before reaching their first formal assessment, will require an Interim Assessment to be completed and returned to Sunderland before they leave, as they will not have completed a full period of induction.
It is always desirable to have at least 63 work days in a contract so that the first assessment period and report can be achieved.
If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Rasheda Khatun.
